In-Service Training Opportunities

Nishtha Rural Health, Education and Environment Centre is situated in the picturesque rural village of Sidhbari, Himachal Pradesh. We offer residential in-house training opportunities in our Village Health Clinic for recently qualified doctors and advanced level medical students. Our busy out-patients clinic offers primary care to the local villagers and draws up to 30 patients a day from all over the Kangra Valley. We hold outreach clinics and health education programmes particularly for women in remote villages that we reach out to with our Single Women’s Programme.

Our limited in-patient facility functions as an emergency treatment centre in times of epidemics, accidents and acute illness as well as providing a facility for patients rest and observation and when necessary a hospice for the dying.
The clinic building has been carefully designed and constructed to fit in with the local environment and provides a welcoming and comfortable facility for patients and staff and for holding seminars and medical camps. The accompanying community centre offers facilities for programmes to empower women and girls, public health trainings, school children’s nutrition, a village library and youth activities.

Students will be invited to sit with our doctors: Dr Barbara Nath Wiser, an experienced allopathic and homeopathic doctor from Vienna and Dr Kusum Thapa a qualified Ayuvedic practitioner, also trained as a general medical doctor. They will also work alongside our pharmacist Ram Chand and our small support staff of local people. Together they apply a holistic view of medicine treating each patient individually using allopathic, homeopathic, ayuvedic and acupuncture treatments as necessary. The interesting and varied work at the clinic and in the twice weekly outreach clinics in the villages makes a period of service here a valuable experience for young doctors.
